August 07, 2012 Although the Upward Bound program is officially ending, participants and staff believe it has helped restore a sense that Southbridge High students can achieve whatever they want.
"Just because you're not in the program doesn't mean you can't do the same thing. … When someone sees you doing good, they want to better themselves," said Mike Agbortoko, a sophomore at Assumption College who graduated in June 2011, after three years in Upward Bound. "Southbridge is a great town, and now is a great time to come together."
Run by YOU Inc. as a collaboration with Nichols College, the five-year-old program recruited 50 freshmen a year for various kinds of extra help, college preparatory exposure, field trips and summer residence at the college. It specifically targeted two groups: those who were first-generation in town (such as Agbortoko, who had come from Cameroon shortly before joining) and those of low income.
